Wisdom of the 8 Bowls
a modern myth for women at mid-life and beyond

Wisdom of the 8 Bowls by Flo Schell, EdM

Hello to you from Flo Schell.

Several years ago I came together in Ashland, Oregon, with 52 individuals from 3 countries.
We convened there to learn from Master Teacher Jean Houston.

Over a period of 8 days we took a journey together through the moments of our lives:
the happy moments, the sorrowful moments, and the defining moments.

Our quest?

To discover what was needed for each of us to become wise and fulfilled
in the next phase of our life.
And to use these discoveries to better ourselves and those around us.

I left knowing that this work would be of great value to others
who were feeling betwixt and between too.

Many of my friends were asking, "What's next and how do I figure it out?"
So I knew it was a universal question.

I took all of the knowledge I gained from Oregon and embarked on simplifying the journey for you.

The result is a loving and powerful story called

Wisdom of the 8 Bowls
a modern myth for women at mid-life and beyond

The story offers 8 secret steps to finding renewed meaning in your life and work.

To remind you to look inside yourself for your own answers.

And to find peace and renewed purpose as the stages of your life continue.

While this book was written with women in mind, its story is a human one for sure.

May you read it. May you share it with others everywhere.

And may it bring you great peace.

With love, Flo

High in the mountains of Southern Oregon stood a majestic and towering Inn.
The Inn was famous worldwide for its brilliant and mysterious Innkeeper, its breathtaking vistas,
and most especially for its magic.

Rumor had it that the Inn only admitted specially invited guests, many of them rich in lineage and in the moonlight of their years.

It was said that one group would arrive in the spring, another at the onset of summer, and still another at the time of the frost.

The last group would arrive on the day of the Fall Equinox.

Each group would stay for exactly 8 days. They came in search of Wisdom.

And while the Innkeeper was known for her brilliance,
it was her heart that opened fully to give all that it had to each guest.

So that when their visit was complete they left not only with Wisdom,
but with hearts that had expanded too.

What most did not know was that the Innkeeper had a special affinity for cooking.
Each day she went to her garden, snipped sprigs of the finest herbs and spices,
and mixed them into a deep and satisfying paste.

She chose one herb or spice each night for the enhancement of her guests.

Thyme, for example, represented the quality of Courage.

And it was this that they earned on their first day by answering the call to a larger life.

Now the Innkeeper's kitchen was filled with pots and bowls everywhere.

They seemed to multiply more and more as the days went on.

But no one seemed to mind.

Because as the bowls grew and multiplied so did the hearts and spirits of the guests.

Now as the journey to Wisdom progressed the guests were given
some difficult tasks to accomplish.

But they were offered helpmates too.

At the end of the 8 days some fortunate guests felt ready to become Wisdom Keepers in the world.

So they left the Inn with the strength and assurance that their life would have new purpose.

And that they would have Wisdom enough to share with all the world.

Which is exactly what they did.

Curious about the Bowls?

The shape, feel, color and texture of bowls have come to have strong significance for me.
Here's how that happened:

In recent years my interest in creating art forms heightened.

One early project, inspired by California artist Helen Redman, involved making a collage that represented the place in my body where self-empowerment resides.

I noticed that I had selected a nesting of empty bowls for that place.
I wondered what that meant.

Soon it became clear.

Those bowls were representing something that was missing in my self-identity.

Something that was waiting to be filled.

So I set out to figure out what that was.

The journey of discovery took me here and there.

To Ashland, Oregon, to study with Jean Houston.

To the work of Mary Catherine Bateson, author of 'Composing a Further Life'.

To Colquitt, Georgia, to train in Social Artistry.

And right back home to NJ to share what I had learned with all of you.
